Barnaby was not like other boys. While other boys liked to run fast or jump high, Barnaby loved to float. He lived in a cozy house with a very soft, very fluffy carpet that looked like a giant, warm cloud. One sunny morning, while playing with his red teddy bear, Barnaby noticed something strange. The carpet began to hum a tiny, happy tune. *Hummm... hummm...* Suddenly, it puffed up just a little bit, lifting Barnaby and his teddy bear off the floor!
"Oh wow!" Barnaby giggled as he drifted toward the ceiling. He held his teddy bear tight. "We're flying!"
Barnaby floated gently up through the window, where the air was fresh and smelled like sweet apples. They drifted over the green hills, past the sleepy cows, and up to the big blue sky. Barnaby was having the most fun ever. But soon, a small problem appeared. A big, fluffy white cloud started to rain. *Pitter-patter, pitter-patter.* The rain made Barnaby's magic carpet feel heavy and sad. It sank lower and lower, almost touching the top of a tall, rocky mountain.
"Oh no!" Barnaby said, looking worried. "We can't get over the mountain. We'll be stuck up here!"
Just then, a bright yellow bird with a shiny beak flew right up to them. It was a bird named Sunny.
"Don't worry!" chirped Sunny. "I know a secret path! Follow me!"
Sunny flew ahead, leading them through a narrow gap in the rocks. The path was windy and a little bumpy, making Barnaby go up and down like a pogo stick. *Whoosh!* *Bump!* *Whoosh!*
"It's bumpy!" laughed Barnaby. "But it's fun!"
They finally made it to the other side of the mountain. The view was amazing! There was a sparkling river and a forest full of dancing butterflies. Barnaby was so happy he almost forgot why they were flying. He wanted to stay and play forever. But then, a deep, rumbling voice called out from the dark corner of the forest.
*ROAR!*
Barnaby and Sunny hid behind a big tree. A big, grumpy-looking bear stepped out of the bushes. His fur was messy, and he had a frown on his face. This was the Bear who everyone said was mean and scary.
"Oh no," whispered Barnaby. "It's the Grumpy Bear. He looks so mad!"
The Grumpy Bear stomped his big foot. *Crunch!* The ground shook. He looked at Barnaby and Sunny with his big, round eyes.
"Get away!" grumbled the bear. His voice was loud and deep. "I don't like loud noises or flying things. Go home!"
Barnaby held his breath. He felt very small and very scared. But then, the Grumpy Bear looked down at the magic carpet. The carpet had a little red spot where the rain had soaked into it. The bear reached out a big, hairy paw and gently touched the wet spot.
"Oh," said the bear softly. His voice changed. It wasn't grumpy anymore. It sounded kind. "That's dry. I haven't had a dry spot in ages. It feels nice."
Barnaby peeked out from behind the tree. The big scary bear was smiling!
"Wow!" Barnaby whispered to Sunny. "The meanest bear in the world is nice!"
"Did you see?" chirped Sunny. "He likes the carpet!"
The Grumpy Bear sat down on the ground and looked at Barnaby.
"Would you like to share?" asked the bear. "This carpet is the best seat in the world. But there's only room for one more. Would you like to sit with me?"
Barnaby looked at the big, kind bear. He felt a warm feeling in his tummy. It wasn't fear anymore. It was excitement.
"Yes, please!" said Barnaby, grinning from ear to ear. "I'd love to share the seat!"
Barnaby floated down gently until his feet touched the ground next to the bear. The Grumpy Bear patted the space on the carpet next to him. It was soft and warm.
"This is much better," said the bear. "Now, let's fly over the river and see what else is out there."
Barnaby held onto the edge of the carpet, ready for the next surprise. They were together, floating high above the world, and it was the best adventure ever.
