Step, step, step. The soft crunch of dry leaves sounded under tiny paws. "Is anyone there?" Barnaby whispered, his nose twitching. "Right here, Barnaby!" Pippa's voice bubbled like a stream. Barnaby froze. He was a little badger with a very big heart. Pippa was a squirrel with a very bright tail. Usually, when they talked to each other, they made a lot of noise. Today, they were extra quiet. "Today is the Day of the Invisible Cloak!" Barnaby whispered, adjusting his glasses. "Yes!" Pippa squeaked. She reached into her pocket and pulled out two shiny, shimmering squares of fabric that looked like morning dew. She handed one to Barnaby. "Hold tight! This is the magic fabric from the Whispering Woods. When we wrap it around ourselves, no one can see us!" Barnaby took the fabric. It felt cool and sparkly, like holding a piece of the sky. "This feels brave!" Barnaby said, wrapping the fabric around his shoulders. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Suddenly, he felt light as a feather. He peeked at his paws. They were glowing with a soft, silver light. "Look at us!" Pippa giggled. She wrapped her fabric around her. She spun in a circle, but she didn't spin fast enough to get dizzy. She stopped and looked around. To her surprise, Barnaby was standing right next to her, but she couldn't see him! "I can't see you either!" Barnaby laughed softly. He nudged a flower, and the flower nodded at him. "We have to go to the top of the Big Mountain to see the Great Sparkle," Pippa said seriously. "But the path is very long and there are many bumps," Barnaby said, his voice dropping to a brave whisper. "That is why we have the invisible cloaks!" Pippa said. She took Barnaby's paw in hers. Her paw felt warm and strong. "Then let's be very careful," Barnaby said. They started walking. Step, step, step. The leaves were crunching loudly now. Step, step, step. They walked past a bush that had thorns. "Watch out!" Pippa warned gently. "I see the thorns," Barnaby said. He carefully lifted his paws over the sharp points. "You are so brave, Barnaby!" Pippa said. They walked past a deep puddle. "That puddle looks deep," Barnaby said, tilting his head. "But we don't need to see how deep it is," Pippa said. She closed her eyes and took a small hop. Barnaby copied her. They landed on the other side with a soft *plop*. "We are doing it!" Barnaby cheered. His voice was loud and happy. They climbed higher and higher. The air got crisp and fresh. The trees grew shorter and the ground became rocky. "Almost there!" Pippa said. Suddenly, the silver light on their cloaks flickered. "Oh no!" Barnaby gasped. The fabric was turning into mist. "The magic is fading!" Pippa cried. She looked around frantically. She couldn't see Barnaby anymore, and she couldn't see the path. The mountain was dark and full of shadows. "I can't see anything!" Barnaby said, his voice shaking a little. "Don't be scared, Barnaby!" Pippa said bravely. She squeezed his paw. Even though she couldn't see him, she knew he was there. "We have to trust our paws and our hearts!" Pippa said. "You're right," Barnaby said. He stopped shaking. He closed his eyes. He remembered how the leaves felt under his paws. He remembered how the wind felt against his fur. He took a deep breath and stepped forward. "Good job!" Pippa said. She stepped forward too. They walked together, feeling their way through the dark. They were brave because they knew they could do it together. "Look!" Pippa whispered excitedly. A tiny light appeared in the distance. It was a cheerful blue glow. It was coming from a small bird perched on a high rock. "It's a little bird!" Pippa said. "And he looks very happy," Barnaby said. The bird chirped a bright song. *Chirp, chirp, chirp!* "He is leading us!" Pippa said. "Let's follow him!" Barnaby said. The bird took flight, flying low and fast over the rocks. He was so brave that he didn't look back to see if they were following. He just flew straight toward the top of the mountain. "Come on, Barnaby!" Pippa called out. "Coming, Pippa!" Barnaby called back. They ran as fast as they could. Their invisible cloaks were gone now, but they didn't need them. They could see the little bird clearly, glowing like a lantern in the dark. "We are going to make it!" Pippa cheered. "Yes! We are going to see the Great Sparkle!" Barnaby cheered. The little bird flew higher and higher, leading them toward the very top of the Big Mountain. They felt warm and safe and very brave. "This is the best adventure ever!" Pippa said. "The best adventure ever!" Barnaby agreed. And up they went, step by step, following the cheerful bird to the wonderful surprise waiting at the top.
