The sun hung high in the sky like a giant, golden ball, warming the soft sand of the desert. In the middle of the heat, a cool breeze whispered through the tall green palms of the only oasis for miles.
"I am so hungry!" Leo rubbed his tummy. He wore a bright red bandana and a big yellow hat to keep the sun out of his eyes.
His best friend, Mia, sat next to him on a smooth rock near the clear water. She had a shiny blue backpack with a picture of a telescope on it.
"I know, Leo. But look!" Mia pointed to the ground.
Leo looked down. In the middle of the cool grass, there was a glowing stone that looked like a piece of the sun itself. It was orange and yellow and pulsed with a gentle light.
"Is that a sun crystal?" Leo asked, his eyes going wide.
"It's a Super Sun Crystal!" Mia said excitedly. She pulled a pair of small magnifying glasses from her bag. "My grandma told me these crystals only appear during the Big Heat. They are very special."
Just then, a shadow fell over them. It wasn't a cloud, and it wasn't a bird. It was a small, round creature made of bouncy orange jelly. It had two big eyes and a smile that stretched all the way across its face. It hopped right up to them, making a *boing* sound.
"Hello, little explorers! I am Jelly!" the creature said in a squishy voice.
"Hi, Jelly!" Leo smiled. "You look bouncy!"
"I am bouncy because I am full of energy! And I need help too!" Jelly wobbled a little. "The Big Heat is making the ground wobble, and the Super Sun Crystal is starting to fade!"
Mia gasped and pulled out her magnifying glasses. "Oh no! Look at the crystal. The light is getting dimmer and dimmer. If it goes out, the desert will be too hot for anyone to play in."
Leo looked at the crystal, then at the wobbly ground. He stood up tall. "Don't worry, Jelly! We are detectives. Detectives always find the clues."
"Exactly!" Mia said. "Where did the energy go, Jelly?"
"The energy is hiding in the Three Whispering Cactus Pits! But they are tricky. You have to say the right words to make the cacti stop their rumbly noise."
Leo and Mia looked at each other. They were ready for an adventure. They walked carefully toward the three tall cacti that stood in a line, each with a funny face carved into them. The cacti were making a loud *Rumble-rumble-rumble* sound.
"Okay, Mia," Leo said softly. "We have to be quiet and brave."
Mia nodded and stepped forward first. She looked at the middle cactus, which had a sleepy face. "Hello, sleepy cactus," Mia said gently. "We are here to make the sun shine bright again. Can you help us?"
The cactus stopped its rumbling and nodded slowly. "The words are 'Shine High, Shine Low, Make the Heat Go Slow!'"
Leo and Mia cheered. They ran to the first cactus on the left, which had a happy face.
"We got it!" Leo shouted. "Shine High, Shine Low, Make the Heat Go Slow!"
The first cactus stopped its *Rumble-rumble-rumble* and turned green. Then they ran to the last cactus on the right, which had a thinking face.
"You did it, Leo!" Mia said. "Now the path is clear!"
The ground stopped wobbling. The air became cooler and fresher. They ran back to the Super Sun Crystal. It was glowing brighter than ever before, casting a warm, golden light over the oasis.
"You did it!" Jelly bounced happily around them. "The energy is back! The sun is safe!"
"We are the best detectives ever!" Leo said, giving Mia a high five.
"And we are very hungry," Mia reminded him with a laugh.
Just as they were about to pick some sweet desert berries to eat, a deep voice echoed through the air. It sounded like wind blowing through a big canyon.
"Good work, young detectives. But the crystal is not the only thing that needs saving."
Leo and Mia looked up. A small, silver robot with wheels for feet rolled out from behind a palm tree. It had a single antenna on its head that lit up in a blinking pattern.
"Hello, humans!" the robot said with a friendly beep. "The Big Heat is coming back soon. It is a cycle. The Sun needs to be recharged every hour, or the desert will wake up from its nap."
"Recharged?" Leo asked.
"Yes! The Sun Crystal holds the power, but it needs a special juice to stay strong. And the juice is hidden in the Star Cave, which is just beyond the dunes."
Mia looked at the glowing crystal. "That means we have to go on a second adventure!"
"I love adventures!" Leo said.
Suddenly, the Sun Crystal let out a tiny *tick-tock* sound, just like a clock. The crystal began to shrink a little bit again.
"The hour is almost up!" the robot said urgently. "If we do not find the Star Juice by the time the sun dips below the horizon, the heat will return, and we will all be very hot!"
"We have to go!" Mia grabbed her backpack.
"Come on!" Leo grabbed Jelly, who was still bouncing happily.
They ran toward the edge of the oasis, where the golden sand met the dark blue sky. The sun was starting to go down, painting the clouds in pink and purple.
"The countdown has begun!" the robot announced.
A giant clock appeared in the sky, floating above the trees. It had a big hand and a small hand. The big hand was sweeping quickly.
"One hour until the heat returns!" the robot said.
Leo looked at the clock. "We have to run fast, but not too fast so we don't trip!"
"Let's go, team!" Mia said.
They ran hand in hand, their boots crunching on the soft sand, leaving the safe oasis behind to face the mystery of the Star Cave. The clock ticked louder.
*Tick.*
*Tick-tock.*
*Tick-tock-tock!*
