The sun was just beginning to peek over the top of the great, green hills when Leo and Maya packed their small backpacks. They were wearing their shiny yellow rain boots and their favorite red hats, ready for a big adventure. Their grandpa had told them stories about the Crystal Cave, a place hidden deep in the Whispering Woods where the stones glowed with colors brighter than a thousand fireflies.
They walked through the trees until the air smelled like cool rain and sweet pine. Suddenly, the trees stopped. A soft, blue light spilled out from between two giant ferns.
Leo gasped. Maya clapped her hands.
Leo held his breath. He looked at the glowing light, then at his best friend Maya. He could feel his heart doing a little happy tap-dance in his chest.
Leo|male>"Wow, Maya. The cave is right there!"
Maya|female>"I can feel it too, Leo. It feels so... excited to see us!"
They tiptoed through the ferns and stepped onto a smooth, gray stone floor. As soon as their feet touched the ground, the walls of the cave lit up. Huge crystals sparkled in shades of violet, teal, and shimmering silver. But the most amazing thing happened when they turned around.
From the corners of the cave, tiny shadows began to float off the ground. They weren't the dark, quiet shadows they knew from their bedrooms. These shadows were wiggly and bright. One shadow shaped like a bunny hopped on the spot. Another shadow, looking like a little bird, chirped softly.
Leo|male>"Look! The shadows are dancing!"
Maya|female>"They're not just dancing, Leo. They're listening!"
Maya took a step forward. The shadow-bunny stopped hopping and tilted its head toward her. When she smiled, the bunny spun in a circle, glowing a soft pink. When Leo giggled, the bird-shadow swooped down and did a loop-de-loop.
Leo|male>"They know how we feel!"
Maya|female>"The cave must be special. It senses our happiness!"
Suddenly, the music stopped. The dancing shadows froze in mid-air. The beautiful colors on the walls dimmed to a dull gray. The air felt a little chilly.
Leo|male>"Oh no. Why did they stop?"
Maya looked at her feet. Her brave smile had turned into a worried frown. She felt a little bit of worry bubbling up in her tummy.
Maya|female>"I think they can feel our worry, Leo. When we worry, the cave goes quiet."
Leo looked at his backpack. He remembered he had left his favorite blue crayon in his desk at home.
Leo|male>"I guess I forgot something. The cave is sad because we are feeling sad about our crayon."
The shadows hung still, looking like little statues. The only sound was the gentle dripping of water from a stalactite.
Maya|female>"We have to make the cave happy again," she said, her voice strong and brave.
Leo|male>"How can we do that if we are still sad?"
Maya|female>"We have to share what we are thinking! When we share our thoughts, the feelings get smaller and lighter."
Leo|female>"That's a good idea, Maya."
Leo closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He thought about his crayon, but then he thought about how much fun they were having in the cave. He imagined the crayon was just waiting for him tomorrow. He smiled a little.
Leo|male>"It's okay, crayon. We'll find you tomorrow."
As soon as Leo spoke, the gray light on the walls flickered back to a soft yellow. One of the shadows, a little dog shape, wagged its tail and did a little bounce.
Maya|female>"It's working, Leo! The cave is happy again!"
Maya felt the worry in her tummy turn into a warm, cozy feeling. She smiled at Leo.
Maya|female>"We did it together, Leo."
Leo|male>"Yeah, we did! Look at the colors coming back!"
The crystals began to glow brighter and brighter. The shadows started to dance again, but this time they formed a huge, swirling spiral in the center of the cave. They were showing them something new.
Leo|male>"What are they showing us, Maya?"
Maya|female>"I don't know, Leo. But I think they want us to keep walking."
Leo took a step toward the center of the dancing lights. He felt a strong pull in his heart, a feeling of pure curiosity and joy.
Leo|male>"Come on, Maya. Let's go see what the shadows are showing us!"
Maya|female>"Lead the way, Leo!"
They stepped forward into the glowing spiral, and as they did, the floor beneath them seemed to open up, revealing a path of sparkling gold that led deeper into the cave, where a soft, humming sound waited just beyond the light.
